Good news for music downloads, Apple and EMI announce higher quality DRM-free music (MacUser).

From Engadget “New versions of songs and albums are DRM-free and 256kbps AAC encoding for $1.29 per song.” That’s US$, so slightly more in Aus. Plus an option to upgrade existing tracks for $0.30 US.

Good news for Aussies, “All EMI tracks will be available in this format, worldwide.” (src).

I understand that Apple has been running the iTunes store at a little better than break even. I would be interested to find out (in the next quarter earnings conference call) if Apple is now aiming to earn profits (or an interest return) from the DRM-free section of the store. I could see that EMI would want some more money but maybe Apple wants some too as the song can now work with other portable music players.
