Crikey—that’s amazing. The various projection technologies are certainly on the plummet. Rear projection TVs are enjoying similar falls in price. At the price, I assume this is a fairly simple device with just a 4-segment colour wheel. But for a grand, who would complain? Lamps are about $550 (fairly typical—projectors are a bit like inkjet printers, I suspect, in that the manufacturer can claw back margin lost up front with sales of consumables over time…). Looks to me like this beastie might also be a good introduction to projection technology for churches on a limited budget. It offers reasonably good brightness and good contrast, and would probably ‘do the trick’ in an evening service in a small to medium sized church. With good light management, it may even be suitable for daytime use. I checked around the net, and this projector is also available from various places for around $A1,400 with a screen included. This looks and smells like an end of model runout—but that’s not always a bad thing if the price is right and the functionality is sufficient for the intended purpose. Mind you, I’m still gobsmacked at the price!

OK. I give up. Where exactly is the ad? And another thing, how come printing of digital photos costs >50% extra when you submit your photos on-line rather than via the in-store kiosks? Smells like a loss leader to me. Kiosks always at the rear of the store… Yep, that’ll be it.

The ad is not online. It’s on the hard copy of the Big W catalogue I received today (probably should have made that clear in the original post). It’s a father’s day catalogue, but it’s not the one they show online… The model is a PD113P (which I linked to above). They sell a screen separately for $186. Certainly could be a good intro for churches, or as a second projector for youth group or work in schools. Printing digital photos? No idea… never used.
