Sydney Anglicans Re-domain

Sydney Anglican Media has changed the domain name’s of their two key sites.

The “network” site (for visitors) has moved from www.sydneyanglicans.net to www.sydneyanglicannetwork.net.

And the community has moved from your.sydneyanglicans.net to www.sydneyanglicans.net.

It just seems to me that this re-domaining is overly complicated in that it has diluted the brand “sydneyanglicans.net” and made the distinction between “network” and “community” less clear. The “your” in the old community site, made it clear that it was a sub-site and hinted at the community aspect; that has been lost. The “network” is a title Anglican Media have used, but I doubt it’s clear to someone looking to find something about the Anglican church in Sydney. And “…network.net” just seems clumsy.

Also, to me, it’s not clear enough on the community site what a visitor should do if they land there after a Google search rather than on the “network” site. But that criticism has nothing to do with the new domains.

The Anglican Media web team do have a difficult task given all the sites they manage, and the size of those sites. I suspect that there might be some politics as well (why else would the SDS appear so prominently in the black network bar at the top of each Sydney Anglican site).

Personally, I think they should have just stuck with the old domains. What do you think? Or did I just write this post on a fairly meaningless topic because I had nothing else to post?

Agree all the way…

I personally prefer using subdomains to differentiate between sites that cater to major divisions in a larger organisation.

And I still get annoyed that there is no ‘.au’ smile

Well, of course they have the .au domains, they redirect.

e.g. http://www.sydneyanglican.com.au http:,//www.sydneyanglican.net.au, http://www.sydneyanglicans.com.au http:,//www.sydneyanglicans.net.au

and many others….

But, yes, I get your point. As a sidenote, if you have a non-.au domain name hosted outside of Australia, you can still tell Google it’s associated with Australia (for localised searches).
