Open Wifi

Now that I have the ability to use Wifi, I’ve noticed that some of my neighbours aren’t all that careful with their Wifi.

At my place, there’s “Virgin Broadband” that appears often, open. At my parents place yesterday, I was able to connect to the next door neighbours (assumed based on the network name) open Wifi.

Surely vendors of Wifi routers/access points need to be turning on security by default.

Legality should also be considered, i am sure that the ISP’s those people belong to aren’t to happy about that either. Also there are security issues for people logging onto unknown wifi networks.

Spotted this online that seems applicable to your situation – The ethics of stealing a WiFi connection

Secure by default is a good rule. It’s no harder to configure up a router that has basic encryption/password on it than a completely open one, but I guess that assumes your platform supports the encryption level it is set to. Lowest common denominator applies here, I think, which is why they are open by default, or disabled by default, in most instances.
