Have you considered buying a Netbook? Netbook’s are the new generation of laptops. Basically, they’re a laptop that’s been hit by a shrink-ray. Check out the dimensions in the picture.

This Dell one, for $699 (there are cheaper ones from other brands), is pretty tempting for a geek. You walk by this little machine in Officeworks and you think, ooo, why don’t I have one of those?

Picture from Dell.

Thing is, what would I do with it. From their name, they’re really a web surfing machine – something to stay in touch with whilst you’re out and about. But, they don’t have 3G. For me – there’s no wi-fi at my school, so I’d need to run a cable. The screen is very small, so I would have to be close to use it, for say entering student grades. I don’t have a projector, so can’t connect it up for PowerPoint or something.

Interestingly, I think this is the form factor that the NSW DET is looking to equip students with (discussed earlier). Thing is, I know the DET specified a DVD drive – ain’t gunna happen in this form factor.

Have you succumb? What’s the battery life like and what do you use it for?
