Managing email

Well using Gmail for my POP and SMTP, whilst thinking I was displaying my real email address from the Outlook settings, was good – things were not that simple. Google insists on using the Gmail address as the sender, even if you specified your real email address in Outlook. So, this was causing problems when sending to email discussion lists, as well as probably causing confusion to recipients of emails from me (which address is correct?).

So, whilst I could use Gmail as a SPAM filter, mboffin.com’s idea still doesn’t result in Gmail being a complete email store (because items sent from Outlook are not being seen by Gmail).

My ideal solution would be using Gmail as my webmail service capturing incoming and outgoing email, whilst retaining my real email address.

Marius Coomans writes about his solution, but I’m not keen on spending US$25.

For now, I’ll keeping thinking and researching. Happy to receive suggestions.

Updated: Actually, I’m sticking with Gmail’s POP and SMTP. Showing the Gmail address on outgoing messages is not great, but I can work-around it for email lists (register the gmail account rather than my primary email address on the list). So, basically this was an entry about nothing.
