Macworld '08… blah blah

Date Stamp:
16 January 2008

If you haven’t read the Macworld ’08 post, you might want to start there, it has details, this post is a bunch of blah (commentary) that will be updated through the day.

  • Not much in the way of Mac updates. The Mac Pro got updated before Macworld; the Macbook and Macbook Pro, well presumably there’ll be updates forthcoming using technology/design from the Macbook Air, but they didn’t want of overshadow the Air. The Mac Mini is looking a bit tired.
  • Australian Macworld (magazine) learnt a lesson about live blogging.
  • No udpates to Cinema Displays… that’s annoying, now I’m sure when I buy a new monitor, they upated the Cinema Displays.
  • Updates to my Mac today, iTunes 7.6, Quicktime 7.4, iMovie, Front Row.
  • No iTunes movie rentals for Australia, yet. Not that we’ve got iTunes TV show or movie downloads, and they were announced ages ago.

(whilst watching the keynote stream…)

  • Not that we have the iPhone in Australia, but one of it’s new features is finding Wi-Fi locations from a service (Skyhook Wireless). Skyhook haven’t mapped Australia yet though, maybe it will be done before the iPhone arrives – doubt it.
  • I reckon that Australia will see movie rentals through iTunes before movie downloads or tv show downloads.
  • I hope iTunes movie rentals comes to Australia, because the conditions are far better than Bigpond movies. iTunes has 30 days to start watching, 24 hours to watch once started. My understanding of the Bigpond movie download service is 24hrs from first purchasing. I got a voucher from Bigpond the other day, so I went to watch a movie – a pathetically small collection, 2007 releases could be counted on a couple of hands.
  • As you look back, Apple have been dropping little hints about this keynote: an PC/Mac ad about Time Machine, featuring HD podcasts (iTunes link) in the podcast directory.
  • Apple have dropped the price for Apple TV, but that doesn’t seem to be reflected in the Aus. store. From APCMag “Apple Australia representatives were unable to provide information about any Australian Apple TV price cut”.

(after watching keynote…)

  • Time Capsule can be used as a normal drive as well as for Time Machine backups (src)
