From Bloglines to Google Reader

Categories: Web Life,

After three previous false starts, I’ve finally moved my feed reading to Google Reader.

In the past I resisted for two reasons, 1. I want to support Bloglines as a competitor to Google Reader – I can’t have Google responsible for all services I use online. 2. I found Bloglines simpler to use, fewer keyboard shortcuts but far quicker.

The move was prompted by the Bloglines servers going whacky again, in the past I’ve waited it out, but I had the time to figure out the Google Reader keyboard shortcuts, they finally made sense. The ease of moving feeds using an OPML file makes moving between feed readers super simple.

I’ve been using Google Reader for a couple of weeks now. I’m still not a fan of the keyboard shortcuts. Although, the numerous shortcuts do offer flexibility in how you read feeds – and for some reason, maybe just because I’m on holidays, I’m actually reading more items in my feeds.

I also don’t like how to keep an item to review later you “star” it. Thing is, because items have been marked as read, you can’t see how many starred items you have. So, when I wandered into the starred items folder this morning, there were 57 items! In Bloglines, there were two numbers for each feed/folder – the number of items unread and the number of pinned items.

Anyway, for now I’ll stick with Google Reader. It’s not blocked at school (which of itself is suprising).
