Education in the media

Categories: Education - General,

It seems that every job/career I’ve been in, is a constant source of media attention.

Before becoming a teacher, I worked for Australia’s largest telecommunications “provider”. So, my employer was often in the news for usually bad reasons.

Now that I’m a teacher, it seems that education is constantly in the news (or maybe I’m noticing it, although I notice that the big T is still in the news). It’s not just this last couple of weeks when Howard and Rudd have both sprouted their answer… it’s all the time.

It’s quite frustrating that after a looong day doing your best, some politician or researcher or general-know-it-all is on the radio as you drive home pointing out all the problems and if they do offer a solution, it’s usually a blanket solution that isn’t really going to work in the many and varied schools.

In this most recent debate, none of the “solutions”/“revolutions”/whatever, has made any real sense.

I guess other professions also face this public commentary, although it seems that health professionals are currently out of the news.

ps Dave, this post was for you (i.e. non-techy)

I find most of the time it’s about blame shifting. I got two emails from the teachers federation referring to the federal funding of public schools. The Australian Education Union feels vindicated to speak their mind because they did a survey where 63% of repondants said that Howard is under funding public schools. This result is not surprising because public school are really the domain of the states. Anyway, that’s whole blog in itself I guess.

Everyone who has been to school is an expert on teaching.

Everyone who has used a phone is a telecommunications expert.

Everyone who has paid an electricity bill is an expert on electricity pricing.

All I can say is, I share your frustrations.
