Credit Card Compromised

My bank informed me today that my credit card has been compromised… dirty little card.
No, not via some dodgey email – via the phone. No, I didn’t give any details over the phone nor did they ask. It’s legit, as they’ve locked me out of Internet Banking temporarily.
It doesn’t seem that it’s a particular transaction I made and nothing has been charged to my account. Whilst she wouldn’t give me details, she gave me an example of what might have happened:
Someone may have hacked (her word) the supermarket’s (she even named a particular chain) phone lines and collected many people’s card details.
So, I’ll be issued a new card number – which means changing all sorts of automatic debits and even worse, having to remember a new credit card number.
I wonder how often this type of thing happens?
