Me: Hello… hello… hello…
Other end: Hello Sir. You have been selected to receive a new mobile phone. It will be sent to you in the next couple of days.
Me: Oh, ok. So I put it in the bin?
Other end: (after a moment)… ah, why would you put it in the bin?
Me: Because I don’t want it.
Other end: Why don’t you want it?
Me: Because I already have a mobile phone.
Other end: (after another moment)… oh… ok… bye.

So was he calling from India or China?

Good response. Anything that stumps them and gets them off the phone.

Not sure of the origin of the call. Probably overseas though – I got that delay, where you’re talking but nobody’s answering. Mind you, I think the delay is actually from the dialing system they’re using.

The delay IS from a predictive dialling system. They place more calls than they have agents and then allocate answered calls to agents as soon as the agents are available. Those that are unanswered or that appear to go to answering machines are abandoned and consume no agent resource.

You ARE on the Do Not Call register, right? (https://www.donotcall.gov.au/) It seems to work. We have noticed a significant drop in unsolicited calls since being on the register. When we did receive a call, I made sure that I got full details from the caller as to who they represented, and made an official complaint to the register (fairly simple, on-line process). Does this mean that I will miss out on receiving a free phone?

Regarding the Do Not Call register… We have a private number. I only made it private within the last year. So, this company doesn’t appear to be updating it’s list of phone number let alone updating from the Do Not Call register. But, yes, have been meaning to put our number in the register (mind you, the exemptions are ridiculous).

No free phone for you.
