A thought for scripture teachers

The lesson before one of my more difficult classes today, they had scripture.

The scripture teacher rewarded some of the students with cans of Coke… not Coke Zero or Diet Coke, the full sugar version. These kids are hypo enough, but that wasn’t the problem. At least 3 of the kids who won a can, needed to visit the loo during my lesson.

Not a good impression for the scripture teacher to make…

Spare a thought for the poor scripture teacher though – bribary is sometimes the only way to control a class that would otherwise go ape for a scripture teacher. Cans are cheap, and do get a good response!

You would have this same problem every day after lunch would you not?

I can understand the rewarding, no problems with that, particularly for scripture teachers who are going to only see this class maybe once or twice.

But 1. you can’t buy Coke or other full-on soft-drink at the school canteen. 2. toilets are available at lunch, not between classes.

Maybe this teacher had just tried everything else possible. But yes, more thought could have been applied on their part.

My post does sound a little harsh… I guess my main point was that scripture teachers need to be mindful of how they operate a classroom, and try as much as they can to understand the school they are working in.

Perhaps dispensing Ritalin tablets instead of cola or lollies is a more viable option.

I agree with Simon. Dumb idea for the SRE teacher to do that – especially when school canteen policy discourages it, but also with no thought as to the ramifications.
Using lollys is equally frowned upon these days because of allergy/hygiene type issues.
Boring, but that the society we’ve created.

Personally I think they wimped out and should have given them the powdery coke. It would have had the kids really looking forward to scripture next time. I’m sure neil does basically the same thing with his coffee…

Simon, are you going to mention this to the scripture guy so that something comes of this incident?

..Or will history just keep tragically repeating?

David, I might – but, I don’t know who it is. One of my classes has scripture in one of my scheduled lessons soon, so I will probably chat with him.
