No Australian podcasts in iTunes

To submit a podcast to the Apple iTunes podcast directory, you need an iTunes account (see Do I need a credit card to subscribe to podcasts?). Problem is, this means that Australian residents cannot submit podcasts to the directory.

And the annoying thing is, I only found this out after creating a podcast feed specifically for iTunes (using the iTunes extensions to RSS 2.0 – 20/01/06: There seems to be a more up-to-date spec – Podcasting and iTunes: Technical Specification).

My plan was to get the podcast feed for the new Toongabbie Anglican Church web-site into iTunes now – given the 1-2 week timeframe to get a podcast included in the directory – so that when the site launched a direct link to iTunes would be available. (Not that the site will be ready in 1-2 weeks).

I guess the requirement for having an iTunes account is to reduce spammers to the directory.

Looks like I will have to wait till the 17th of October. That’s the latest rumour date for iTunes Australia.

Simon, this is a great idea to include the message in the iTunes podcast directory. I am ready and waiting … waiting … waiting for the iTunes Music Store to open in Australia.

Yeah, I found this out some weeks ago when attempting to do the same from Westserve.

Just a note about this whole issue: when the new site is up and running and the podcast is a regular thing (from TACWEB), we should probably think about how to easily ‘package’ the audio file. IE, a ‘top and tail’ on the talk file to introduce it and maybe to finish off… I have a couple of ideas…

Neil, yeah a top and tail would be nice. Quite easy to do with streaming media and metafiles (gives a knod to the Streaming Media Tutorial).

Maybe there’s an app out there that takes a SMIL file and compiles it for you (making it easier to add the top and tail). See my SMIL for podcasting rant.
