Neil and I have been discussing the development of a web-site that will allow churches/preachers to have a space for the storage and distribution of audio talks, including podcasting.

Podcasting is changing people’s viewing/listening habits. Me, I used to listen to ABC Newsradio or BBC Worldservice whilst sitting at my PC for hours on end, with the occasionally change to some music. Now, I can fill up hours with podcasts. I tend to listen to tech podcasts, simply because I can choose to tune in and out. The mainsteam media has never really dealt with tech, they either dumb it down, or simply consider the business/enterprise impact.

I received an email from the Apple iTunes Podcasting Team this morning (as my email is the owner of the Toongabbie Anglican Church Podcast – wonder how long it will be till the spammers find all those email addresses in podcasts!). Found that one reference has changed and Apple have a forum, so I thought I would post the links here for future reference.

Now that iTunes Australia is here and a podcasting service has been launched by SydneyAnglicans.net, podcasting is likely to take off in Sydney churches. But will that just mean audio sermons distributed via RSS, or something more?

To submit a podcast to the Apple iTunes podcast directory, you need an iTunes account (see Do I need a credit card to subscribe to podcasts?). Problem is, this means that Australian residents cannot submit podcasts to the directory.

Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, said that 2005 was the year of HD (i.e. high definition video), whilst that prediction has not really been fulfilled for the end user, 2005 could be called the year of video on the internet.

David Penrose, in his article EDcasting asks “Whatever happened to SMIL?”. He suggests that SMIL could be renamed to something like “EDcasting”. In this article, I suggest that rather than being a competing “casting”, podcasts could be delivering richer experiences through the delivery of SMIL files rather than a simple MP3 or QuickTime file.
