With the launch of the Mac App Store and my recent purchase of an iPhone, I’ve been installing a number of apps recently. Some are worthy of sharing with other Mac/iPhone users.

Without trying to explain why I like Twitter, let’s just say it’s good. I previously posted about various apps that took Twitter out of the browser. In a comment to that post, Mark Bowen pointed me towards EventBox a Mac OSX app. Here’s a short review of EventBox.

How to backup the backup?

I have a network connected external hard drive that has lost the capability to communicate with one network protocol. So, I need to return it under warranty, however that means I need to backup all the data on it.

A decent back-up solution for my computer has been on my mind for a while. I had in place a simple back-up of email and web-site files to the other hard drive, and uni files to a 250Mb zip drive (yes, people still use zip drives!). Well, the zip drive disk failed, showing that it was not a good medium for back-up, and Windows Backup cannot save to a CD-RW.

Managing email

blog · 19 July 2005 · permalink

Well using Gmail for my POP and SMTP, whilst thinking I was displaying my real email address from the Outlook settings, was good – things were not that simple. Google insists on using the Gmail address as the sender, even if you specified your real email address in Outlook. So, this was causing problems when sending to email discussion lists, as well as probably causing confusion to recipients of emails from me (which address is correct?).

The in-laws have a PC used mainly for digital photos and email. I’m sure if you are somewhat computer literate, that you have relatives that rely on you as their computer technician. Microsoft, if they are really interested in security, need to think a bit out-of-the-box to help users make it easier to manage their computer.
